The basics

What Is a Balloon Wall?

A balloon wall covers a whole surface, usually 6 to 10 feet across, so the balloons themselves become the backdrop.

An arch outlines and a garland follows a line, but a balloon wall is solid from edge to edge. It stands on its own frame or grid in front of whatever is behind it, which in New York might be a radiator, a kitchen pass-through or a Williamsburg loft wall covered in pipes. That makes it a photo wall, a stage background, a cake-table wall or a branded step-and-repeat without touching the building.

No other piece of balloon decor delivers as much impact per square foot. Walls work for birthdays, weddings, grad parties, gender reveals, holiday parties, product launches and corporate events, and every photo comes out clean because there's no gap for the room to peek through.

Wall styles

Types of Balloon Walls We Build

Five ways to build a balloon wall. Each has its own look and its own price point.

Organic balloon walls

Mixed balloon sizes layered across the whole frame give an organic wall its cloudlike, sculpted texture. It's the most lavish style and the first choice for weddings, showers and big birthdays. It also takes the most balloons, so it sits at the top of the range.

Grid and link balloon walls

Grid walls, also called quick link or balloon link walls, are made from linking balloons tied into a net, so every balloon sits in a tidy row. That order lets you spell out a heart, a number, a checkerboard or stripes. The look is bold and graphic, and it's the easiest way to match brand or team colors exactly.

Framed balloon walls

Framed walls fill a shaped frame with balloons. The frame does much of the styling: an arched chiara frame feels elegant, a square frame feels modern, and a ring frame feels playful.

Foil and mylar balloon walls

Foil walls use mylar hearts, stars, squares or rounds in metallic finishes. They bounce light, look sharp on camera and contain no latex, which matters for guests with allergies and for hospitals, schools and offices that ban latex outright.

Floating and lighted balloon walls

Floating walls are helium balloons on ribbons anchored in rows, so the surface sways gently. They're dramatic but brief, best for a few hours. Lighted walls weave in LED strings or LED balloons for night parties, rooftop events and New Year's Eve.

Sizing

Balloon Wall Sizes and How Many Balloons They Take

Choose the size by the shot you want. An 8×8 ft wall fits six to eight guests in one photo.

Balloon wall sizes and typical uses
Wall sizeWorks forWorth knowing
6×6 ftCouples, small groups, a dessert-table wallThe usual pick for apartments and private dining rooms
8×8 ftGroup photos, a cake table plus guestsOur most requested size
8×10 ftStages, head tables, step-and-repeatsNeeds roughly 9 ft of ceiling, so lofts more than apartments
Custom widthsLong loft walls, stages, store windowsBuilt in panels that fit an elevator, then joined in the room

A grid wall of 11-inch link balloons uses about 1.2–1.5 balloons per square foot; organic walls use two to four times as many. Measure ceiling height (many prewar apartments run 9 ft, many lofts 12 ft or more) and keep 2–3 ft clear in front for photos.

Uses

Ways to Use a Balloon Wall

A balloon wall pulls its weight by doing several jobs in one footprint, which counts in a New York room.

Balloon photo wall

The spot for selfies and group shots. Add a neon sign or a vinyl name and there will be a line.

Cake and dessert table backdrop

Set behind the cake, a wall keeps photos tidy and hides the kitchen, the coats or the radiator behind it.

Stage and head-table background

Behind speeches, DJs, award presentations and wedding head tables.

Branded step-and-repeat

A grid wall in brand colors with a logo panel, made for launches, galas, pop-ups and press nights.

Room divider

Screens off a bar setup, a catering station or a storage corner in a rented loft or hall.

Gender reveal moment

A neutral wall with a hidden pop panel, or one that turns pink or blue on the reveal side.

Occasions

Balloon Walls for Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations and Holidays

These are the celebrations that book balloon walls with us most often.

  • Birthdays: walls for kids' parties and 18th, 21st, 30th and 40th birthdays, often with the age or a name set into the design.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: ivory, blush and champagne organic walls behind the sweetheart table or at the reception entrance.
  • Bar and bat mitzvahs: themed walls for the photo area and grid walls in the guest of honor's colors.
  • Graduations and prom: school-color grid walls with the class year, plus glam walls for prom photos.
  • Gender reveals and baby showers: neutral walls with a reveal moment, or soft pastel walls for the shower.
  • Valentine's Day: foil heart walls in red, pink and rose gold.
  • December and New Year's Eve: red, green and gold walls for office parties, and black, gold and silver chrome for the countdown.
  • Launches and corporate events: branded walls for pop-ups, store openings, galas and conferences.

Installation

How We Install a Balloon Wall Without Damaging Your Walls

The short version: nothing gets attached to your walls at all.

Each balloon wall we build stands on its own weighted frame. That protects your paint and your security deposit at home, and it keeps us within the rules at New York venues, where hotels, lofts and event halls almost always ban tape, nails and adhesive on their walls. A freestanding wall can also slide a few feet on the day if the caterer needs the corner.

  1. 1

    Check the space

We confirm the wall size, the ceiling height, outlets for lights, and the route in: elevator size, stairs, doorways and the service entrance.

  2. 2

    Carry in and assemble

Bigger walls arrive as panels sized for the elevator or stairwell, get joined in the room, then fluffed until the seams vanish.

  3. 3

    Finish and check

Signs, vinyl, foil accents and lights go on last, and we check the wall from the spot where photos will be taken.

What can I use to stick balloons to a wall? Ideally nothing: stand them on a frame in front of the wall instead. If you must hang balloons directly, use removable adhesive hooks with fishing line or ribbon rather than tape or glue dots, and test the hook in a hidden spot first, since older plaster and fresh paint both peel easily.

Longevity

How Long Do Balloon Walls Last?

Indoors and air-filled, several days. Helium floating walls, a few hours.

An air-filled organic or grid wall keeps its shape for several days indoors, often a full week, and foil walls last even longer. Floating helium walls begin to droop within hours. Keep any wall a few feet from radiators and heating vents, which dry out latex fast in winter. Outside, build on the day: summer sun on a rooftop fades and pops latex quickly, and freezing air shrinks it.

Questions

Balloon Walls in New York: FAQ

What is a balloon wall?

A balloon wall is a solid, freestanding panel of balloons, usually 6 to 10 feet wide, used as a photo backdrop, a stage background or a cake-table wall. It can be organic, grid-style, framed or made from foil balloons.

How much does a balloon wall cost?

Our foil balloon walls start at $135 for 8×5 ft, grid walls at $475 and organic walls at $700 for 8×8 ft, with delivery, setup and pickup included in the five boroughs. Size, style and extras set the final price.

How long do balloon walls last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, often a week. Foil walls last longer. Helium floating walls last a few hours, and outdoor walls in summer sun or freezing cold last only hours.

What size balloon wall do I need?

An 8×8 ft wall is the most popular and fits a group photo or a cake table. A 6×6 ft wall suits apartments and couples; 8×10 ft and custom widths suit stages, lofts and head tables.

What can I use to stick balloons to a wall?

Removable adhesive hooks with fishing line or ribbon, not tape or glue dots. Better still, use a freestanding frame so nothing touches the wall at all, which is how we build every balloon wall.

Will a balloon wall fit in my apartment elevator?

Yes. Large walls are built in panels sized for a passenger elevator or a stairwell and joined inside your apartment or venue.

Can a balloon wall be latex-free?

Yes. Foil (mylar) walls contain no latex, so they're the right choice for guests with latex allergies and for venues that don't allow latex.

Can you put a name or logo on a balloon wall?

Yes. Names are added in custom vinyl or a neon sign. Logos go on a panel set into the wall, or are worked into a grid wall in brand colors.
