The basics

What Is a Balloon Garland?

A garland is a bendable rope of balloon clusters. It goes wherever there's a line to follow.

Build balloon clusters along a strip and you get a garland: a strand that can curve, hang, drape and wrap. It can frame an apartment door, swag along a brownstone mantel, trace a staircase rail, skirt a cake table or outline a backdrop. Mount it on a frame and you have a balloon arch; bend it into a ring and it's a hoop. That range is why garlands are the piece New Yorkers order most for home parties, where every foot of floor counts.

Pricing by the foot keeps garlands simple to budget. Measure the mantel, doorway or table, multiply, and you'll know your ballpark before you even request a quote.

Organic vs. classic

Organic Balloon Garlands vs. Classic Garlands

Nearly every garland we build now is organic. Here's the difference, and when the classic style still wins.

What does organic balloon garland mean?

Organic means the sizes are mixed and the clusters are deliberately uneven: little 5-inch balloons, regular 11-inch, and a few 16- to 24-inch balloons for scale. The result has depth and movement, closer to a floral piece than to a party-aisle decoration, and it looks rich in photos.

What is the difference between an organic and a regular balloon garland?

A regular or classic garland repeats one cluster of matching balloons along its whole length, so it reads as a tidy rope or a spiral and needs fewer balloons. An organic garland is fuller, looser and denser per foot. Classic suits school spirit, team colors and buttoned-up office events; organic suits showers, weddings, birthdays and anything headed for Instagram.

Balloon garland clusters and accents

Each garland is made of small clusters, usually three or four balloons each. What you tuck into those clusters sets the style: chrome and pearl balloons, double-stuffed balloons in custom tones, foil stars or hearts, confetti balloons, or a few stems of greenery.

Placement

Where Balloon Garlands Work Best

Anything with an edge, a rail or a frame can carry a garland. These are the spots that work hardest in New York homes and venues.

Apartment and building doors

A garland around the apartment door or the lobby entrance tells guests which floor is having the party.

Brownstone and prewar mantels

Decorative mantels are made for a draped garland, and they turn a living room into a party room in minutes.

Staircases and railings

A garland down a townhouse banister in Harlem or Brooklyn Heights, or a loft staircase, sets up the grand entrance for sweet 16s and engagement parties.

Cake, dessert and gift tables

Draped along the front edge or run down the middle like a runner, a table garland frames the cake for every photo.

Backdrops and shimmer walls

A garland sweeping over a shimmer wall, panel or flower wall is the photo spot we're asked for more than any other.

Walls, windows and rooftop rails

Garlands hang on plain walls, around windows and, with permission, along rooftop or terrace railings.

Marquee letters and numbers

Wrapped around light-up letters, a garland spells a name, an age or a class year.

Storefronts, bars and offices

Over a shop window, a bar back or a reception desk for openings, launches and staff celebrations.

Sizing

Balloon Garland Sizes: How Long Should Yours Be?

Measure, then add a foot or two. A garland that spills past the edges looks generous; one that stops short looks skimpy.

Balloon garland lengths and balloon counts
LengthGood forBalloons (organic, approx.)
5–6 ftA cake table, a narrow mantel, one wall accent60–110
8 ftA 6 ft table with overhang, a full mantel100–145
10 ftAn apartment door, a 7 ft backdrop120–180
12–15 ftDouble doors, a backdrop combo, a long buffet150–270
20 ft and upStaircases, loft walls, stages, a full arch240–360+

Organic garlands take about 12–18 balloons per foot; larger balloons and fuller designs shift the count. Long garlands are carried in sections and joined in place, so stairs and small elevators are no problem.

How many balloons go into a 20 ft garland? Expect roughly 240–360 for an organic style. Built classic-style from 11-inch balloons, the same length uses about 100–130.

Styles

Garland Styles: Flowers, Greenery, Pearl and Mini Garlands

Start with the garland, then finish it so it looks like your party and nobody else's.

Balloon garlands with flowers and greenery

Silk or fresh flowers, eucalyptus, ferns, dried pampas and trailing greenery woven between the clusters push a garland toward floral design. It's the top request for bridal showers, christenings, garden-style brunches and Mother's Day.

Pearl, chrome and metallic garlands

Pearl latex gives a soft glow, while chrome balloons shine like mirrors in gold, silver, rose gold and champagne. Scatter a few through each cluster and the whole garland looks more expensive. Full-chrome garlands are a New Year's Eve and anniversary staple.

Mini and small balloon garlands

Built mostly from 5-inch balloons, a mini garland is fine and delicate. It suits a cake stand, a highchair at a first birthday, a mirror or a bar cart in a small apartment.

Hanging and ceiling garlands

Garlands can also fly overhead: swagged across a loft ceiling, strung above a dance floor or wrapped around a tent frame. Those are rigged to the venue, so we treat them as custom balloon installations.

Pricing

How Much Does a Balloon Garland Cost in New York?

Garlands are priced by the foot. These are our starting points and the things that change them.

Balloon garland pricing
GarlandStarting at
Accent garland (lighter, fewer large balloons)$25 per foot
Standard organic garland$35 per foot
Deluxe garland (fuller, chrome, foil and florals)$45 per foot
Grab-and-go garland, 5 ft (pickup, you hang it)$125
Grab-and-go garland, 8 ft$175

Installed garlands have a 6 ft minimum. Delivery and hanging are included across the five boroughs.

What moves the price: the length, how dense it is, the share of large, chrome or double-stuffed balloons, florals and foil accents, whether we hang it or you collect it, and the building: a sixth-floor walk-up or a timed freight elevator adds carry time. A 10 ft standard organic garland hung in your apartment starts around $350, and every quote is written for your actual space.

Your options

Grab-and-Go Garlands vs. Installed Garlands

Both work. The right one depends on the length, your building and how hands-on you want to be.

What is a grab-and-go balloon garland? It's a ready-made garland, usually 5 to 8 feet, that you pick up and hang yourself. It's the budget option for a small space. In New York, think about the ride home before you order one: a 5 ft garland travels fine in a roomy car, but anything past 8 feet won't survive a cab or the subway, so longer garlands are installed.

Timing

How Long Balloon Garlands Last, and How Early to Hang One

Indoors, an air-filled garland holds up for days, which takes the stress out of timing.

How long do balloon garlands last? Indoors and air-filled, a garland keeps its shape for several days and often a week before it softens. Outdoors in shade, about a day. On a sunny rooftop in summer, a few hours. Outside in winter cold, the balloons shrink and wrinkle within hours, then recover once they're back in a warm room.

How far in advance should I make a balloon garland? For an indoor party, a day or two ahead is fine and nobody will notice. Most of our clients book the install for the evening before or the morning of. Outdoor garlands, whether on a summer terrace or a winter stoop, go up on the day and as close to start time as practical.

Questions

Balloon Garlands in New York: FAQ

What is a balloon garland?

A balloon garland is a flexible strand of balloon clusters that can hang over a doorway, drape along a mantel or stair rail, run across a table or outline a backdrop. Mounted on a frame, it becomes a balloon arch.

How much do people charge for balloon garlands?

Garlands are priced by the foot. Ours start at $25 per foot for an accent garland and $35 per foot for a standard organic garland, with a 6 ft minimum, installed. Grab-and-go garlands start at $125.

How long do balloon garlands last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, often a week or longer. About a day outside in shade, and a few hours on a sunny summer rooftop or outdoors in freezing weather.

How many balloons are in a 20 ft garland?

Roughly 240–360 in an organic style, at 12–18 balloons per foot. A classic garland of 11-inch balloons uses about 100–130 for the same length.

What is the difference between an organic and a regular balloon garland?

Organic garlands mix balloon sizes in uneven clusters and look full and textured. Regular garlands repeat identical clusters in a neat pattern and use fewer balloons per foot.

How far in advance should I make a balloon garland?

One to two days before an indoor event is fine. Outdoor garlands should be hung the same day, especially in summer heat or winter cold.

Can you hang a balloon garland in a rental apartment without damaging the walls?

Yes. We use freestanding frames, tension rods, removable hooks or existing fixtures like curtain rods and mantels instead of tape, so nothing pulls paint and your security deposit stays safe.

Can I carry a grab-and-go garland home on the subway?

We don't recommend it. A 5 ft garland rides well in the back of a car or an SUV rideshare. For longer garlands, or if you don't have a ride, choose installation.

Are balloon garlands still in style?

Yes. Organic garlands with mixed sizes, florals and chrome accents are still the go-to for showers, weddings, birthdays and holidays. The trend is toward softer palettes and more texture.

What can I use instead of a balloon garland?

Fabric draping, a paper flower wall, a greenery garland or a shimmer wall. Plenty of hosts combine a shimmer or flower wall with a short balloon garland to get both looks.
