The basics

Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars: What They Are

Columns, towers, pillars, posts: four names for one idea, a vertical stack of balloons on a pole with a weighted base.

Because a balloon column stands by itself, it goes almost anywhere: either side of an apartment door or a brownstone stoop, the ends of a stage, down a ceremony aisle, the corners of a dance floor, or beside a booth at a trade show. In a New York room, where floor space is precious and many ceilings can't take anything hung from them, columns are the simplest way to add height and color.

They're also the budget-friendly entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and if you want more later, a garland across the tops turns them into the classic "balloon arches and columns" setup seen at school dances, lobbies and store openings.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

The pole and base never change. The pattern built around them is what gives each column its personality.

Classic stacked columns

Four-balloon clusters stacked snugly up the pole, in a single color or in stripes. Clean, bold and the most economical column we build.

Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)

Shift the colors one position on every cluster and they corkscrew up the column. Two colors look sharp and simple; three colors are the most popular, from red, white and blue in July to black, white and gold for a launch; four colors suit rainbow, Pride and team themes.

Organic balloon columns

Mixed balloon sizes in loose clusters give a softer, fuller column that matches an organic arch or garland. The extra balloons put them above classic columns in price, and they're the modern pick for weddings, showers and bar and bat mitzvahs.

Themed and novelty columns

Columns can turn into objects and characters: a crayon or pencil for the first day of school, a palm tree for a luau, a candy cane or snowman in December, a traffic light for a cars party, a pumpkin stack for Halloween. They're a fun way to decorate a school hallway, a community room or a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers

The topper is what ties a column to your celebration.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for an age, an anniversary or a class year. This is the column we're asked for most.
  • Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes for graduations, Valentine's Day, sweet 16s and quinceañeras.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble balloon filled with confetti or feathers, or printed with a name.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: for grad parties, moving-up ceremonies and senior nights.
  • Logo and letter panels: for lobbies, launches and store openings.

Sizing

Balloon Column Heights and Balloon Counts

A standard column stands about 6 feet before its topper goes on.

Balloon column sizes and balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop column2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral column5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic column7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic column5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

Counts cover the column body; toppers and clusters at the base add a few more. Columns usually ride the elevator fully built, and tall toppers are attached once we're in the room.

What size balloon for a column? Most columns are built from 11-inch latex balloons in groups of four, which makes a column around 18–20 inches wide, slim enough for a hallway or a lobby corner. Organic columns add 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in New York?

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Go

Columns do their best work in pairs, framing something worth looking at.

Stoops, doors and lobbies

At the foot of a Harlem brownstone stoop, beside an apartment door or flanking a doorman lobby on the Upper West Side, so guests know they're in the right place.

Stages and DJ booths

One at each end of a stage or DJ table puts performers and speakers in a frame for every photo.

Wedding aisles

Short columns down a ceremony aisle, or two tall ones where the couple stands.

Dance floors

At the corners of the floor, sometimes joined by a garland canopy overhead when the venue allows rigging.

Booths and showrooms

Brand-color columns make a booth or a showroom door easy to spot from across a crowded floor.

School auditoriums and gyms

Rows of school-color columns for graduations, moving-up ceremonies, prom and homecoming.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays

June graduations keep our columns busiest, but they show up at almost every kind of New York event.

  • Graduation: school-color columns with grad caps, stars or the class year for grad parties, moving-up ceremonies, prom and senior night.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: ivory and gold or blush organic columns at the ceremony and the reception door.
  • Birthdays: a column with the age on top, from a first birthday to a 70th.
  • Bar and bat mitzvahs: columns at the entrance and beside the dance floor in the party's theme colors.
  • Corporate events and launches: brand-color columns for lobbies, showrooms, booths and openings.
  • Holidays: December lobbies, Halloween, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, Pride and the 4th of July.
  • Quinceañeras and sweet 16s: columns lining the court's entrance into the hall.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in New York Weather

Columns are tall and catch the wind, so the ones that live outside are built heavier.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases, and we tie them to a railing or gate when the building is fine with it.
  • On a sidewalk, columns stand against the building line and leave the walking path clear.
  • Air-filled columns outlast helium ones outside, especially in winter, when helium balloons shrink and sink.
  • Summer sun on a stoop or rooftop fades and pops latex within hours, and dark colors heat fastest; winter cold shrinks it, so outdoor columns go up close to party time in both seasons.

Longevity

How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?

Indoors, several days. Outdoors, it depends on the season.

How long will balloon columns last? Air-filled and indoors, a column holds up for several days and often a week, as long as it isn't parked next to a radiator. Outside in shade it lasts about a day; in full summer sun or below freezing, a few hours. For indoor events, columns can be set up one or two days ahead, which helps with early-morning graduations and school assemblies.

How many balloons are in a balloon column?

About 40–60 11-inch balloons for a 5–6 ft classic column, 60–80 for a 7–8 ft column, and 60–100 or more in mixed sizes for an organic column.

What size balloons are used for a balloon column?

Standard columns use 11-inch latex, four balloons to a layer. Organic versions blend in 5-inch and 16–18-inch sizes for texture.

How long will balloon columns last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day outdoors in shade, and a few hours in direct summer sun or freezing winter air.

How far in advance can a balloon column be made?

One to two days ahead for indoor events. Outdoor columns should go up the same day, in summer and in winter.

Is a balloon tower the same thing as a balloon column or pillar?

Yes, for practical purposes. All three are a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base; "tower" usually means a column with a large topper.

Can balloon columns go on the sidewalk outside my building?

For a few hours, yes, as long as they stand against the building and leave the sidewalk clear. Check with your building or store landlord first, and we'll weight them for the wind.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. Columns are air-filled and held up by a pole and weighted base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.

What is an organic balloon column?

One where the balloons are grouped in loose, mixed-size clusters rather than tidy matching rings. It reads softer and fuller, and it pairs naturally with an organic arch or garland.
